The following piece of text is a response to “This Is What Extinction Sounds Like”, a video detailing natural soundscapes and their recent decay due to human influence.
This video was excellently crafted. The story it told and how it was told was amazing. Bernie is an expert in his field and you can tell this is something he is beyond passionate about. Learning about how sound tells a story about a particular habitat was incredible. We often fail to respect the effect of sound in any given environment until we lose it. Soundscapes are so fascinating and it is tragic realising that we are losing the natural sound of the world due to our own hubris as humans.
The techniques utilised by Bernie was technologically impressive. His studio was filled with machines and intricate knobs and speakers. His field gear was equally as interesting. His sheer collection of sounds recorded from across the world was marvellous. The isolation and comparison of the soundscapes was particularly effective in providing context to what we have lost in nature.
